Teach the Teacher Course for Doctors

This 2 day course is ideal for core and higher specialist trainees, SAS doctors, consultants, and other healthcare professionals who teach in all specialties. It covers key concepts every teacher needs to know.

Don't expect only the basics of 'how to teach a small group' and 'how to give a lecture' - we'll go beyond that and explore how we can teach in a way that really helps people learn - in the classroom and the clinical environment. Led by a clinical academic in medical education.

On both days, registration and refreshments is from 8.30am, course starts at 9am, and finishes by 5pm.

Venue: Meetpoint Midlands, DE74 2DA.

"I have been teaching formally and informally my whole career, but I learnt a huge amount over the two days and feel inspired to change things up and be more confident and skilled in how to facilitate learning." (Clinical Educator)

Day 1

Teaching in the classroom

Please come with a classroom teaching session (lecture, tutorial) you have delivered before, or prepared in advance of this course. On Day 1 we will cover some key evidence-based principles of instruction that make teaching much more effective. At the end of Day 1, we want you to review your teaching materials and lesson plan in the light of what you have learned.

Day 2

Teaching in clinical environments

On Day 2, we'll start by sharing some of our reflections from Day 1, then move on to teaching in the clinical workplace. We'll cover some key ideas about the learning environment, formative assessment and feedback, and how to teach when time is limited. Please come prepared with examples from your own experience and we'll consider what specific changes could be made in light of what we have learned.

Afterwards

We'll provide you with further resources so you can explore some of the ideas learned on our course in more detail and continue to put them in to practice in your own place of work.
